Three months ago, I had the privilege of experiencing the work of Medan Initiative for the first time. Going into the trip, I was nervous and unsure of what to expect, especially since I had not met the team until we gathered at the airport in Dulles. Very quickly, however, one thing became clear: the kindness of every person involved is what makes this mission so impactful.
From the children at RAEY, who greeted us each day with hugs and smiles, to Mengesha and Fre, who graciously welcomed us into their home, I was continually moved by the warmth and generosity shown throughout the week. Although I spent only a short time with the team, they made me feel like family. Their love and dedication to the children was evident in every interaction, and it was clear that the children deeply loved them in return.
What makes the work of Medan Initiative so meaningful is that these folks do more than just support the mission—they live it. Their commitment extends far beyond their time on-site at RAEY, as they work year-round from the United States to create lasting change for children in Ethiopia. It was an honor to witness the impact of that dedication through the water well ceremony at RAEY and to see firsthand the gratitude of the students, staff, and community for access to clean drinking water, healthcare, and medicine.
Beyond the service work, this experience was filled with unforgettable moments—embracing new adventures, celebrating beautiful culture and music, and building meaningful friendships with truly selfless people. Most of all, I will always be grateful for the overwhelming kindness, love, and joy I experienced throughout the trip.
